These generally do full damage and healing regardless of how many targets they hit and the lack of details on their tooltips. The general exception to this rule is generally DoTs, HoTs, and Healing Raid Cooldowns. It does become hard to test a Soft-Cap of 20 versus an uncapped spell, so some of these values may be inaccurate. In Shadowlands, while it doesn't look like the 20/6 Rule is changing, many new spells have been changed from a soft-cap following the 20/6 rules to a hard-target cap, explicitly stating this hard-target cap on the tooltip, however, there are still many spells that appear to follow the 20/6 Rule and are only soft-capped. Most spells that do not explicitly mention a hard-cap on the tooltip are generally soft-capped and follow the 20/6 Rule. There are very few non-DoT spells in WoW that are actually completely uncapped. This means that AoE healing spells will no longer gain additional healing past 6 targets, but the spell will split the healing equally across all targets hit (excluding player pets). Similarly for healing, the default for healing spells is soft-capped at 6 targets. This means that AoE damage spells will no longer gain additional damage past 20 targets, but the spell would split the damage equally across all targets.

In Patch 5.2 in Mists of Pandaria, Blizzard changed the way AoE damage caps work by adding a soft-cap at 20 targets. 2,000 total damage.Įffects that "Meteor" effectively have a Soft-Cap of 1 as the damage does not increase, the damage is split equally among all available targets.


After this set number, the damage will be redistributed equally among all available targets. Soft-Capped abilities will hit all targets, but their damage will be capped at a set number of targets. Each new target increases damage at a smaller and smaller rate.
